ONYX picks up three green tourism awards in Chonburi as its sustainability programme starts producing numbers

Three Chonburi properties were recognised at a Thailand Department of Tourism showcase, and the group's own reported figures now attach hard energy and emissions estimates to the effort.

Three ONYX Hospitality Group properties in Chonburi have won awards at the Ultimate Thailand Green Tourism Showcase 2026, organised by Thailand's Department of Tourism as part of the Chonburi Smart Green Tourism initiative. Amari Pattaya and OZO North Pattaya were recognised in the Creativity & Innovation category, while Amari Bangsaen took the Unique WOW Experience award, according to a Media OutReach Newswire release published 1 November 2026.

For operators, the more useful part of the announcement is not the trophies. It is the measurement scaffolding around them: a multi-site certification, an ESG system, and one property-level project with specific, if company-reported, targets attached. Readers following this should also see Pan Pacific's Version 2.0 rebuilds more than half its portfolio since 2020.

What the awards actually cover

Per the Media OutReach release carried by Macau Business, the three awards reflect what ONYX describes as a holistic approach covering energy and water efficiency, waste management, carbon reduction, community and stakeholder engagement, recognised environmental standards and measurable results. The properties sit under ONYX for Planet, the group's framework, which integrates environmental, social and governance principles across operations.

Sukamal Mondal, VP – Operations and Sustainability & Community Engagement at ONYX, said in the release that sustainability creates value when principles are translated into "meaningful, locally relevant action", and that the group is "moving beyond individual initiatives to demonstrate impact: what has changed, what value has been created and, wherever possible, how progress can be measured."

That quote is the operational signal in the story. Award submissions reward visible initiatives; the shift Mondal describes is toward auditable outcomes, which is where sustainability programmes start to matter to owners and asset managers. Our sustainability coverage tracks how often that shift actually happens.

The certification behind the properties

Beyond the awards, ONYX Hospitality (Thailand) Co., Ltd. has achieved GSTC Hotel Multi-site Certification, issued by Control Union Singapore Pte. Ltd., a GSTC-accredited certification body. GSTC stands for the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, which sets international standards for sustainable tourism. A multi-site certificate covers several properties under one audit framework, which reduces the per-property compliance burden compared with certifying each hotel separately.

The release also notes a partnership with CarbonWize to build the group's ESG data management system and greenhouse gas emissions monitoring framework. For a management company, that is the unglamorous plumbing: without a data system, claims about carbon reduction stay anecdotal.

The one project with hard numbers

The most concrete figures in the announcement concern Amari Don Muang Airport Bangkok Hotel, where SP Group's Cooling-as-a-Service solution has been operational since April 2026. Cooling-as-a-Service is a model where a provider installs and runs cooling equipment and the hotel pays for the cooling it uses, rather than owning the plant itself.

According to the release, the solution is expected to:

  • reduce energy consumption by more than 40%
  • save approximately 900,000 kWh of electricity annually
  • cut carbon emissions by around 449 tonnes per year

These are issuer-reported expectations, not audited results, and the release itself states the issuer is solely responsible for its content. Still, the shape of the arrangement matters for operators weighing capital expenditure: shifting cooling to a service contract moves upfront plant cost off the hotel's balance sheet and ties payment to delivered output. Whether the savings land as projected is the number to watch in a year. ONYX says it is exploring energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions with SP Group across suitable properties in Thailand, so the Don Muang site functions as the test case. This connects to our earlier piece, Debt service coverage ratio for hotels: what lenders require and operators must hit.

Why Chonburi matters in the picture

The awards land in a province where the Department of Tourism is running a dedicated smart green tourism initiative, meaning the recognition is part of a government programme rather than a standalone marketing exercise. For ONYX, which operates the Amari, OZO, Shama and Oriental Residence brands across Asia-Pacific, the Chonburi cluster offers a compact demonstration of the framework the group says will remain part of its long-term strategy as it expands.

The claims to watch next are the measured ones: whether the Don Muang cooling project hits its 40% and 449-tonne targets, and what the CarbonWize system starts publishing. More coverage of results like these sits in our travel news section and broader hospitality news reporting.
